How One Snowboarder’s Dream Became a Global Movement
Snowboarding is more than just a sport—it’s a lifestyle, a passion, and for some, a lifelong obsession. For Snowboard Addiction founder Nev Lapwood, that obsession started at just ten years old in New Zealand. What began as a personal drive to get better on a snowboard evolved into a revolutionary training system that has helped riders worldwide progress faster than ever.
The Beginning: A Kid with a Dream
Like many of us, Nev started out as a skier, influenced by his parents. But after spotting a snowboarder on the mountain, something clicked. He convinced his parents to go 50/50 on his first board, and from that moment, snowboarding became his world.
After finishing school, he moved to Whistler, Canada—not with the goal of starting a business, but simply to ride the best snow on the planet. Working in restaurants by night and riding all day, he soaked up everything snowboarding had to offer.
From Instructor to Innovator
Nev quickly became a certified instructor, moving through the ranks of snowboard coaching, training riders of all levels. But he realized something: his knowledge and techniques could only reach the people he physically taught. That’s when an idea sparked—to create an online platform where snowboarders could learn anytime, anywhere.
snowboardaddiction.com was born.
It started with simple training manuals, MP3 guides, and video tutorials, but it quickly evolved into something much bigger.
Pioneering Snowboard Training Gear
As Nev coached snowboarders in camps around the world, he used homemade training tools—like strapping skateboard decks to trampoline boots with bike tubes—to help students learn grabs, spins, and rail tricks. These makeshift tools worked so well that he thought, Why not make them into real products?
That led to the creation of Snowboard Addiction’s first game-changing training tools:
- The Tramp Board – A snowboard-like board designed specifically for trampolines, allowing riders to practice jumps, grabs, and spins in a safe environment.
- The Jib Board & Balance Bar – Perfect for simulating rail tricks at home, these tools help riders master jib tricks and presses before ever stepping on snow.
YouTube: The Game Changer
Snowboard Addiction’s timing couldn’t have been better. Just as the company was gaining traction, YouTube was taking off. It became the perfect platform to share high-quality snowboard tutorials with a global audience.
To this day, YouTube remains the company’s most powerful tool, reaching millions of snowboarders eager to progress their riding. If you’ve ever searched “how to do a snowboard trick,” chances are you’ve seen a Snowboard Addiction video.
