Prerequisite Techniques

  • 180 Tail Butter, 180 Out
  • Switch Frontside 360
  • Switch Backside 360

Backside 180 Switch Tail Butter, 360 Out

Most people find the Backside 180 Tail Butter, 360 out easier than the Frontside version.

Step 1:

Start by practicing Switch Frontside 360's on a mellow slope. Traverse across the slope on your heel edge and Ollie a Switch Frontside 360. The 360 Out is the hardest part of the trick so it's crucial that you can do these very quickly and easily.

 Step 1: Switch Frontside 360
Approach Switch Front 360 on heel edge

Step 2:

Next, try a Backside 180 Tail Butter to Frontside 180 Out. This is the logical warm up trick to have on lock before attempting the 180 Tail Butter to 360 Out.

 Step 2: 180 Tail Butter, 180 Out
You should be able to do this in your sleep

Step 3:

After you do the Backside 180 into a Switch Tail Butter, let your board cheat a little by allowing it to continue to spin on the Tail Butter an extra 90 degrees, then pop a 270 Out.

Once you slide to 90 degrees, POP the 270 Out

Step 4:

For the complete trick, you do a Backside 180 into a Switch Tail Butter and Ollie a Switch Frontside 360 Out. This should be a continuous movement throughout the trick with no paused moments.

Edging:

It's very easy to catch an edge on this trick, so pay attention to what edges you are taking off from and landing on.

For the Backside 180, start on your toe edge, this helps initiate your momentum in the backside direction for the rest of the trick.

180 pop around, landing on the tail of your board. The Tail Butter should be with a flat board, with slight pressure on the heel edge.

When you 360 Out of the Tail Butter, the entire rotation of this 360 trick is stopped by landing on your toe edge

Trick Tip: The two most important things to remember are keeping your movement smooth with a continuous rotation throughout the trick, along with a strong pop for the 360 Out.

Frontside 180 Switch Tail Butter, 360 Out

The Frontside version of this trick follows the exact same steps as the Backside version. The only difference is that you will be spinning in the opposite direction and using the opposite edges of your board.

Step 1:

To nail the Frontside version of this trick, start by practicing Switch Backside 360's on a mellow slope. Traverse across the slope on your toe edge and Ollie a Switch Backside 360.

Step 2:

Next, practice a Frontside 180 Tail Butter to Backside 180 Out.

You should be able to do these easily before trying the 360 Out.

Step 3:

After you do the Frontside 180 into a Switch Tail Butter, let your board cheat a little by allowing it to continue to spin on the Tail Butter an extra 90 degrees, then pop a 270 Out.

Step 4:

For the complete trick, you do a Frontside 180 into a Switch Tail Butter and Ollie a Switch Backside 360 Out.

Terrain

Once you’ve learned the trick on mellow ground, you can use it on different terrain (such as rollers, over knuckles, off cat tracks, and into powder). These are fun spots to get buttery and will challenge your technique.

Summary

This is an advanced buttering trick that's difficult to learn but looks very stylish when done well. Backside is definitely the easier version of this trick.
